club WITH NO NAME live review

CAPDOWN + $UP + EVIL MACARONI

23rd November 2000
Capdown thumb nailIt was a tough choice for the people of Peterborough on Thursday 23rd:

1. An evening of Ska-punk or
2. An evening of a band that brought us the infectious yet annoying "Tequila".

While the jury decided, we went in convoy to The Park to be faced with one of the most packed-out nights the Club With No Name has seen, including the King Adora gig.

Sadly, I walked in half way through the Evil Macaroni set, which had the masses' appetites firmly quenched. I walked in at the moment a very drunk Mr Litchfield appeared to be fed up with the trumpet for one song and decided to join the crowd in a jump and shuffle. This band certainly knows how to get the crowd going.

Bass player Jim was sporting a very luscious red and black Teddyboy suit while guitarist Andy sported a luscious Roy "Chubby" Brown-type suit. Complete with new drummer Pete, who, like all the other drummers on the evening was solid and fun to watch. Geordie the very under-rated vocalist kept the screams and attitude perfectly.

$up (a new band from the ashes of Gravel and Deep Toll) is made up of Shaun on vocals, Rick and Mark on guitars, the amazing Craig on drums, Tom on bass duties and brother Will on saxophone and backing vocals (is there nothing this boy can't do?). Influenced by the likes of Less Than Jake, NOFX and The Mad Caddies, this band have something different with what they describe as "speed, anger and comedy". On this night however the vocals were a little too buried in the mix for my liking and I only caught a small reference to Britney Spears before resuming my dropped jaw stance to who could possibly be the best drummer in Peterborough. For a first gig this band have definitely got their S@!t together, tight, energetic and catchy riffs. Expect a lot from this band.

Capdown: a perfect end to a Punk-fest evening. Lead singer switching to saxophone then climbing on bass bins? Damn it that's good! Maybe one more song and I'd have gone into ska overload on this occasion, but they gave every song their all and satisfied the crowd to the end.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT-
Geordie spitting on the drunk and oblivious John Litchfield.

LOW POINT-
Maybe too much ska in one night for some.

Phil Rigarlsford, GIMPmag.
