MOOD SWINGS 26th May 2001Miss Black America, who come from Bury St Edmunds, recently released their debut single ‘The Adrenaline Junkie Class-A Mentalist’ on Cambridge's Repeat Records. If you saw this band then the title would come as no surprise. This 45 minutes was driven by pure energy mayhem twisted into some powerful guitar riffs, interesting bass lines and a ‘fire poof’ vocalist that just couldn’t keep still. Their on-stage performance was really something not to be missed, a mentalist exhibition of how energy can be fused into an adrenalin-heated frenzy. Excellent live! ![]() Kingcow, the band who all the youngsters had turned up to see, were tearing out their deep metal riffs giving their new fan base something to bite at. This band just go from strength to strength and although Craig looked a little hung over, he still managed to hurtle out them heartfelt melodies that have that distinctive Jekyll meets Hyde characteristic about them. Craig’s vocals give Kingcow that unique edge that annotates over some skilful guitar thrashing, chunky, intricate bass lines and a drummer that just can’t get enough kit. SUFFRAJETS This was my second encounter with the Suffrajets after seeing them for the first time supporting Snowdogs under the previous moniker of The Pink. This London-based female trio bring a post grunge rock sound which singer Alex described previously as ‘Cheesy Stadium Rock’. After a few problems with the ‘fuck off’ sized bass amp the girls soon started churning their melodies into the air waves. They hadn’t really changed much from the first time I’d seen them, still the same daunting vocals backed up by some attractive guitar riffs mixed into a real depthy bass (a lot to do with the amp) giving a meaty rock-based sound tied in with solid, well-timed drumming. A refreshing change! Jed, GIMPmag ![]() Still smarting from having a dancing child knock beer over my girlfriend and myself, I decided to take a seat to soak up the next band. Coming from South Wales, Tetra Splendour began their set with a blissed out choral sound not too dissimilar to the Super Furry Animals. Through their whole performance I could detect many different influences which go into the pot to make a wonderful stew. Punctuated with a David Holmes or even Manics style keyboard riffs over pure New York pop, if Tetra Splendour don't go to the top I'll show my arse on the market. MALLUKA Smiling painted faces provided a stark contrast to the dark art pop of Malluka. Amongst the darker Pistols or even SLF sounds there was a glimmer of mellow summer fun sprinkled over the top. The smiling faces danced and drank as the tunes got darker, yet like soap baddies you've got to love them. Simon, GIMPmag. Mood Swings 2 was a Sunday afternoon and evening event which also featured Beever, HHH, Muy Feo, Velosonic and Yellow Alert. |
