REMOTE CONTROL + SHORTWAVE15th February 2001 Shortwave have been together for over 3 years now. They first met at Nottingham University and are Steve - Guitar, PK - Bass, Lance - Drums and Damien - moves. Their musical influences are more to do with booze and having fun. Steve added, "Have you ever had a Burger King that gave you a panic attack? I did!" This just about sums them up. Shortwave have always wanted to be popstars and they are about to release their E.P. If It All Ends which is an absolute mind blower.Shortwave kickstarted the evening with some excellent tunes. This was one band full of interesting musical ideas. Their whole performance was an energy-driven power ride of guitar thrashing, serious skin beating and some meaty bass lines. The music was very much that of punk rock with a drummer that foams at the mouth, a rather peculiar groovster 'Damien' and some refreshingly different tunes like "If It All Ends" and a favourite of mine, "Wanker". This band reminded me of the Sex Pistols meets Blur/Super Furry Animals. This band will get far. The second band of the night to pull off another incredible performance was the glammed up pop rockers Remote Control. They formed exactly, according to singer/guitarist Ben, 1 year and 8 days ago. With Mike the drummer, Sami the guitarist, Jonathan on bass and Ben, Remote Control are a mix of glam samples and dance beats mixed into a musical potion of indie, rock and punk. Their musical influences range everywhere from Suede, Iggy Pop, Jane's Addiction to the Carpenters and Chas and Dave. They are aiming to bring something back and they totally enjoy every minute of it. The band’s plans for this year are to tour the album, write new material and do as many festivals as they can. Remote Control took to the stage and burst into a fury of energetic glam pop rock. As they started to unfold the wonders of their set in their DIY outfits, the stage just came to life. This is one band that just screamed sex... through-out their whole performance which was a very sexy mystical ride down a path of ones dreams and desires. With a fusion of catchy guitar chords, tricky bass lines and real uplifting vocals entwined with the most haunting synths, Remote Control are one band that every teenage girl will soon be caressing on their wall. This was just a prime example of another great night had by all from the Club With No Name. As Ferrero Roche would say: "Sir, you are spoiling us." ;) Jed, GIMPmag. |
