club WITH NO NAME live review

SNOWDOGS + SUFFRAJETS (formerly THE PINK)

14th December 2000
First up, The Pink, who through a cunning plan are about to change their name to The Suffrajets to avoid confusion with Pink, that R’n’B chick with the hair that’s, surprisingly enough, pink!

Which takes me to the three 18-year-old Londoners who graced the stage with confidence. Most cynics would say "girls don’t look right with guitars." Emma, Charlie and the gorgeous Alex would disagree!

They all are gorgeous but Alex was my personal favourite with perfect presence on stage and a sexy husky voice not too dissimilar from Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame. When asked by this reporter if the aforementioned 70’s rock band influences her, the reply was a positive.

Charlie the dark dressed, kill-you-with-a-stare bass player supplied perfect backing vocals, though I did think there needed to be more!

Suffrajets thumb nailGemma: wonderful smiles and stage presence, but very basic drumming. She was very solid and did not put a foot wrong which is something the Manics drummer can’t say. Sadly, like I say, basic.

As a band (which is the most important thing) they clicked together nicely with a corker of an opening track which I was very peeved to not own on the CD! Grrrrrr!

The band managed to slowly lose the interest of the audience as the set went on, but kept most interested with the smiles (which not a lot of bands do! I think) and smooth flowing songs which may have been more interesting with different time signatures as opposed to the 4/4 rock beat. Oh and a few more harmonies. When they did them they were fantastic, there just wasn’t enough. I know I made this point earlier but I’m quite adamant on this.

Snowdogs thumb nailThe Snowdogs. Shit name, fantastic band, but too much politics. Here’s an equation for you: MUSIC + POLITICS = BORING BOLLOCKS! PLEASE don’t mix the two. It was all right in the 60’s but it's just damn boring now.

A lot of anthems in there, a lot of stage presence and a sound not a million miles away from The Offspring! That was another member of the audience's opinion. Mine was more Janus Stark!

Three guys with punk appearance and great prospects, superb guitar playing and solid drums. A band that has got their shit together. Just change the name and the in-between song banter. I would have stayed longer if it wasn’t for the politics and set which seemed to last forever!
