SUBWAY + AUNT SPIKER23rd May 2002Yet appearances are deceptive. Subway delivered emotionally shattering songs drawn from a well of experience with shades of PJ Harvey and Skunk Anansie. And the In Crowd was at Club With No Name at The Park to take in the charged atmosphere as revellers listened intently to some awesome sounds. See Photos. The In Crowd, Peterborough Now. Subway are the leading female rock band in France. They established their reputation with independent releases and hundreds of gigs including national tours with New Model Army, Ash and The Offspring amongst others, and signed to Universal in April 2002. Subway were visiting Britain to play a concert on May 25th in Cockermouth, where they had been school exchange students ten years previously. Gigs in London and Peterborough were added to create a short tour. A diary of the journey appears on the Subway website. This is a rough translation of the entry for the 23rd: Then there is the surprise date. It is only 1 hour 30 minutes from London. We arrive at 5pm at CLUB WITH NO NAME (yes, that's the name of the place). It has a very rock'n'roll exterior, but there's no one there. We, always optimistic and in search of the veggie burgers you can't find in France, drive off hoping to unearth a small inexpensive English cottage, at the edge of a lake, kept by a kind French-speaking woman who knows how to cook... because we don't yet know where we're going to sleep after the concert. As usual we'll end up in a Formule 1 Hotel, which isn't so bad. We return to the venue. The interior is very rock'n'roll too with an old odour of beer or something (no comment). We unload. Sylvain seems pleased except that we won't get the whole effect, the sound will be rather rough and ready. We make our soundchecks without problems, during which the support group arrives. The singer resembles Tim Wheeler of Ash, from which we guess some of their influences, which prove to be correct when at the end of the concert they tell us they are fans. There won't be a big crowd there this evening either but those present are most appreciative, that's the main thing. At the end of the evening, truck loaded, we wheel towards our beds. Tomorrow's programme is travel and rest, which will do us good. Subway |
