YELLOW ALERT + FUSE20th January 2000
After hearing their highly addictive tune "Lo-Fi Sci-Fi" on the latest Vibrations From The Edge Of Sanity 7" Singles Club compilation it was one gig that I couldn't afford to miss. I hadn't heard of tonight's support Fuse before, but based on the growing reputation of bands from Norwich, I somehow knew that they would have something to offer. You only have to look at bands such as Magoo and Kaito to get an idea of the sort of quality and originality that this East Anglian hotbed is churning out.
A fairly poor turn out for this gig then, but it didn't really affect either band's performance. Female fronted three piece Fuse were up first. My first impressions were a timid bunch, but fiery in looks. In fact the singer of the band has a vague similarity to thingy from that fantastic Australian soap "Home And Away". The band's material had serious potential, but that really was as far as it went. Lacking in confidence and range. Unlike some up and coming acts Fuse can play their instruments though. I look forward to seeing this band develop into another respectable Norwich act.
Yellow Alert took to the stage at 10.30pm. Immediately they gained my interest as the front man of the band, Shane, was wearing some of the loudest flared cords and shoes that I'd seen for a while. Much to my approval "Lo-Fi Sci-Fi" was their opener, after an original solo effort start by Shane and his big red guitar. (I think that must be entitled "Wazo", from the set list that I nabbed).
If "Hi-Fi Sci-Fi" is the only tune that you've heard by the band, then don't be fooled. The rest of the material ranges from a strong Beatles-ish influence to quirky nursery rhymes and playground chants, along with some very original vocal effects. Other songs that tickled my fancy were the one entitled "Sexo" and the last one played in the set, "Yo Yo". When it came to giving the wanting crowd a well deserved encore, it was no apparent problem for the four piece as frontman "Shane has written over 200 songs this year" exclaimed the excited compere.
(There is now rumour of a Yellow Alert album coming soon so watch this space. Also, since this gig the two girls that front Fuse have decided to start a new band, with a new drummer (brother of Kaito's drummer, Ditta) and a new keyboard player, going by the name of Motel. So good luck to them.)
